In the first issue of the Colgate AAUP chapter’s newsletter, Charles Naef defined the role of the AAUP as “to guarantee that Colgate University is in full compliance with the national AAUP principles, rules, and procedures that define the rights and obligations of the academic profession.” He described the group as an “autonomous body of the faculty” that would “promote the effective representation of faculty interests and improve communication within the faculty.” Issues of interest to the AAUP included “academic freedom and personal autonomy, faculty work loads, leaves, and policies on tenure and promotion, and the economic status of professors.”
